Wood City Stockholm

Encompassing over 250,000 m², Stockholm Wood City will be the world’s largest wooden urban construction project. Combining housing, workspaces, restaurants and shops, the development aims to create a new, vibrant urban environment in Stockholm’s southern area of Sickla.

Status

The world’s largest wooden city

Planned to begin construction in 2025, this ambitious project represents a new chapter for timber construction. Envisioned as a vibrant urban zone featuring a mix of housing, office spaces, restaurants, and shops, Wood City will include 7,000 office spaces and 2,000 homes – vastly expanding available space in Stockholm’s over-crowded real estate sector while keeping its environmental footprint to a minimum.

“Our industry leaves a big mark, and it is important for us to make a positive difference in both the shorter and longer term,” says Annica Ånäs, CEO of Atrium Ljungberg. “We want to create an environment where our customers, those who will live and work here, can participate in the development and design of the city district of the future.”

The project’s emphasis on office space is intended not only to respond to the deficit of workplaces south of Stockholm's inner city, but also to shorten commuting times for more people. In a country where energy supply and efficiency are high on the national agenda, the project will also focus on self-produced, stored, and shared energy, investing in resource-efficient construction methods and circular material flows.

With natural elements integrated into the buildings, such as green roofs for enhanced insulation and expansive windows to maximize natural light, the Wood City design reflects our aspiration for a city that harmoniously coexists with nature.
The buildings within Stockholm’s Wood City will be built from fireproofed mass timber. In addition to being a carbon-sequestering material, wood offers a host of other benefits, including improved well-being for people.

“We want to create an environment where our customers, those who will live and work here, can participate in the development and design of the city district of the future.”

By prioritizing office space, our design addresses the shortage of workplaces in Stockholm’s southern area, aiming to reduce people’s commuting times while focusing on self-sustaining energy solutions to align with national energy goals.
