Status

A new ‘green heart’ for the city, Vinstra Park illustrates how a climate adaptation measure to prevent flooding can create value for both people and nature, through a multi-functional design approach.

Flood protection is the central element of the park, with a water drainage dip running through its entire 15.78 hectares/39 acres. Facilitating diverse activities are a playground, pump track, walking path, zipline, pavilion, and amphitheater. A large plaza connects paths and facilitates movement through the space.

A month prior to the park's opening in September of 2023, a major flood occurred in Gudbrandsdalen. During a previous flood in 2013 the park area was flooded, but 10 years later, the flood protection proved to function as intended.

Designed for climate resilience

The choice of materials and plants is based on the natural conditions of the Midt-Gudbrandsdalen region, featuring mountains, pine forests, and grazing landscapes. Large solitary pine trees and much of the existing pine forest has been preserved in the design.

Vegetation near the stream can withstand both droughts and floods, creating natural diversity in the park and varied nature experiences for users as well as animals and insects. South of the stream designed terrain forms, vegetation, meadows, and mowed paths harmonize, while in the transition area lies an open grassy area and a natural playground. The park’s drainage ditch is characterized by large stones, natural glass, herbs, and plants – forming a stylized stream winding through the area. Care has been taken in the floodway having utility value, as well as being aesthetically pleasing, even in periods of drought.

A space for connection

Surrounded by a sports hall, high school, and bus terminal, Vinstra Park shares a close connection to the city center, while inviting experiences and interaction between visitors. Walking and cycling paths create connections, while a nature trail, playground and pump track encourage physical activity for children and adults in the town.

Varied meeting places positioned throughout the park create space for social interaction as well as relaxation. The space houses several outdoor stages and an amphitheater to be used for both small and large events, as well as general gathering spaces. The park’s pavilion is arranged as an outdoor cinema that can also be used to stay dry in the rain or take a moment to rest.

The park's nature playground encourages recreation and natural connection for local children. Tom Gustavsen, 2024
The pavilion structure's natural wood material integrates it into its surroundings. The structure, designed by RAM Arkitektur, can be booked for various events and functions, or be used as a spot for casual conversation or rest. Tom Gustavsen, 2024
