Status

Located just north of Copenhagen, Gentofte Library is an enduring example of Henning’s intuitive use of daylight in his design. Simple, deliberate interior lines emphasize natural light and shaping both the space and mood, while a large central atrium connects smaller reading and research areas. Slanted skylights diffuse light throughout the library, guiding visitors and defining communal spaces with a sense of calm and openness.

“Gentofte Library was incredibly significant for Henning, as it has also been for the community. Today, it’s still a very beloved library in Copenhagen.”

Designed as a dynamic space

The two-story, 7,500 m2 library houses public functions on the ground floor, with administrative offices, a staff canteen, and reading rooms on the first floor. Northern and southern entrances to the building are connected by a walkway, opening into a welcoming foyer area with information services and an exhibition area.

A reading room at the main entrance, styled as a winter garden, offers views of the surrounding park and a bright, comfortable place for locals and visitors to meet year-round. The centrally located lending department, flooded with daylight from generous skylights, sits alongside the children’s area and arts department. Its open, double-height space provides access to a small lecture hall to accommodate community gatherings, workshops and library events.

A library that inspires

In 2010, we completed a study that found that students preferred to spend more time at Gentofte Library than compared to other nearby libraries. Students found the space more attractive and inspiring.

Today, the library welcomes 800,000 visitors annually and serves as the central library for the Capital Region of Denmark. Known for its dynamic calendar of events including writers' evenings, cultural events, creative workshops, and entertaining children's activities, the library acts as a cultural cornerstone of the community.
