Fritz Hansen Pavilion

For their 150-year anniversary in Copenhagen’s 2022 3daysofdesign festival, we designed a 500 m² pavilion for the Danish furniture brand, Fritz Hansen. With a Nordic approach centered around daylight and honest materials, the pavilion design fully embraced temporality: mindfully designed to be taken down and repurposed elsewhere.

The pavilion’s design was deliberately simple – a shell-like, transparent structure that let daylight and nature in, forming a unique setting for the exhibition of Fritz Hansen’s furniture throughout the festival. The design follows an approach similar to that of the brand: prioritizing simplicity, natural elements, and high-quality materials.

“Celebrating the 150-year anniversary of Fritz Hansen, we wanted to create a spatial experience that made a sustainable home for the furniture it exhibited. A facilitator for the design of Fritz Hansen. Built in solid wood, the Pavilion was inspired by the garden it was situated in, creating a hybrid space with fluid transitions between inside and out.” — Eva Ravnborg, Market Director Denmark, Partner at Henning Larsen.

Following the festival, through the summer of 2022, the pavilion hosted a range of activities, from events and exhibitions to summer school programs and workshops introducing visitors to the design community.

Set within Grønnegården – Designmuseum Denmark's garden – the pavilion's design echoes its surroundings with its tiered roof and low profile referencing the neighboring gabled 18th-century buildings. Laura Stamer, 2022

Designed for disassembly

Low-carbon materials and circular design principles were central to the development of the pavilion. With all its components designed to be disassembled and repurposed, the design ensured that waste was minimized – leaving no traces on site – and that all materials could be reused elsewhere; with planned reconstruction on the grounds of Fritz Hansen’s headquarters in Allerød.

The façade features alternating black timber slats and translucent polycarbonate panels, while inside, plywood floors and surfaces come together in a light-filled space for showcasing Fritz Hansen furniture. Laura Stamer, 2022
