Status

Rooted in the ambition to create an educational environment where open dialogue flows freely, the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management was conceived as a small city within its larger urban setting. The school’s heart is the publicly accessible Street of Knowledge – an open lobby running through the building and paying homage to one of Frankfurt’s oldest commercial streets, Die Zeil. The space integrates the school into the city and serves as a meeting place for students, faculty, and members of the business community.

Breaking away from the traditional hierarchy of learning, the design emphasizes the exchange of knowledge beyond formal classrooms, something that encourages informal dialogue and social interaction. To support this, the layout offers a diverse variety of spaces: 61 areas for teamwork and informal encounters, 38 seminar rooms, 11 intimate lecture rooms in the shape of amphitheaters, and a central auditorium.

The benefit of daylight

A signature of our design, natural daylight supports student performance and wellbeing. A skylight and the staggered placement of the five structures of the building guide daylight deep into the building, creating bright, uplifting spaces for study and collaboration.

“Light is fundamental to both life and learning. It fuels focus, performance, and creativity. The varied, daylight-filled spaces have, since 2017, supported a generation of students preparing to give back to the city of Frankfurt,” says Louis Becker, Global Design Principal at Henning Larsen.
