Status

Awarded the HafenCity Gold certification, Spiegel’s headquarters in Hamburg's inner harbor opens its waterfront views to the public, consolidating the various branches of the media group into an open, dynamic work environment.

The two glass volumes create a transparent connection between the city and media organization. Rising from a shared brick base, the building complex reflects Hamburg’s historical heritage – the old warehouses along the wharf. The public plaza between the buildings carries an open invitation for citizens and employees – and a unique opportunity for social interaction across city life and media work.

A waterfront restaurant and pedestrian walkway encourages tenants, employees and passersby to step outside, creating a dynamic community space at the base of the media headquarters. Cordelia Ewewth, 2011

The media house features a large, south-facing ’Window to the City’ spanning from the 3rd to the 12th floors, allowing amplified views into and out from an active editorial environment.

The adjacent multi-tenant office building is designed with an open and flexible layout, subdivided to meet changing needs of the future. The building’s position ensures a view for all tenants while creating a plaza space between the new buildings – facilitating vibrant interaction.

Playing with light and structure, the open layout of the building is emphasized. Andreas Gehrke, 2011
