Albert Street
Dubbed the “Rainforest Tower,” our design for this mixed-use building will anchor a new green spine running down Brisbane’s Albert Street. Featuring an abundance of vertical greenery that creates habitats for flora and fauna, the structure will pay respect to the city’s unique subtropical climate and vibrant, youthful culture.
The tower is a new addition to the Albert Street Cross River Rail Priority Development Area, whose 2,500 m² site intends to create a new social heart and contemporary landmark for the city. With the location at the corner of Albert and Mary Streets, it is positioned opposite a future station, which will facilitate convenient public access and increase traffic. The 40 story tower will accommodate workplaces, retail and hospitality venues, and a range of civic spaces, while also creating an accessible public realm and pedestrian experience that will be comfortable year-round.
Created in collaboration with Blaklash and Fulcrum, who facilitated a dialogue and feedback process with the Traditional Custodians of the land, the design is informed by Brisbane’s cultural heritage and natural surroundings.
Inspired by Mount Glorious, located north-west of Brisbane, our design utilizes vertical space to pay homage to both the site’s historical significance and its environmental surroundings. With lush greenery cascading down the building, the design reflects Brisbane’s unique subtropical climate while paying homage to the rainforest Binbilla Story. Lower levels are designed to evoke the rainforest understory, its base recalling the creek bed through its materiality, while the upper levels will represent the rainforest canopy. This design narrative extends to the rooftop of the building, where the mountain’s peak is referenced.
