Research and innovation

A readiness to drive change

We are creative, critical, and decidedly impact-driven. Continuously challenging preconceived notions of the built environment and well-established norms, we strive to push the boundaries of what design can offer. With curiosity and a critical eye, this path of progress is lined with experimentation, exploration, collaboration, and above all, a willingness to embrace uncertainty.

Research and innovation are therefore key drivers in our strategy, allowing us to question habitual thinking and enabling an imaginative capacity for truly novel solutions; ones that are equally relevant today and tomorrow. But great ideas often come from unexpected places, which is why we look to a wide range of fields and methods, bringing new insights and perspectives into our projects, processes, and design community.

From cutting-edge digital tools and new materials, to urban well-being, indoor acoustics, and the effects of lighting – we work with an applied research approach to broaden our reach, investigate our blind spots, and ultimately, elevate the quality of our designs.

Our aim is to support new ways of thinking and working. We’re insisting on interdisciplinary perspectives and a readiness to challenge the status quo with curiosity and compassion.

Industrial PhD research

Among our research initiatives, we’ve had the great pleasure of welcoming Industrial Ph.D. fellows to our team, combining the best of academia and industry in doctoral programs carried out through collaborative frameworks. We couldn’t be prouder of this nerdy bunch and value the insights they continuously bring to our processes; infusing them with academic rigor and a sense of possibility.

Digital tools

In today's data-driven world, incorporating new technologies and digital tools is central to pushing the boundaries of design. This allows us to identify novel solutions and optimize our processes, while also supporting our knowledge-based approach. From urban-scale scenario comparisons of embodied carbon to supporting informed selections of native flora through an open-source plant database, we’re developing tools to elevate the impact of our designs and broaden their reach.

Prototyping

As designers, we’re invested in creating spatial solutions and translating concepts and values into tangible and tactile experiences. From integrated green façade elements and hybrid 3D-printed slabs, to exploring ways to build with compressed straw panel and designing for disassembly, prototyping allows us to manifest our initiatives and see them take form while carving out room for new materials, methods, and approaches.

Social impact

Our built environments act as containers for experiences, stories, cultures, and communities. Lined with infinite associated meanings and diverse practices, we approach space as a significant social resource. Whether deepening our understanding of user groups through ethnographic research methods, exploring the characteristics of inclusive hybrid spaces, or investigating urban well-being through micro-climate studies and an intersectional lens – our interdisciplinary team is on a committed path to strengthen the social impact of our projects.

Accountability for resources

Rethinking business-as-usual, means moving away from linear economic models and altering our approach to materials, the very building blocks of our practice.
