Open source data catalog of construction materials

In 2021 we launched Unboxing Carbon; a course providing designers, architects, and industry peers with the knowledge and tools to calculate and understand the upfront carbon (CO2e) of construction materials. Now, we are expanding Unboxing Carbon with a catalog that details all the data that has been calculated and validated by our course participants, and we want to share it openly to forge a new path to reducing our industry’s carbon footprint.

Construction materials account for 11% of global carbon emissions. That’s more than four times the emissions of aviation. The solution is simple; we can bring these emissions down significantly by choosing different construction materials. However, navigating data about materials can be complex.

Unboxing Carbon – the Catalog is intended to give architects and designers the means of assessing global warming potential (GWP) in the product production phases. The catalog presents complex data from Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) in a visually accessible way, and in a readily understandable unit for architects: m².

It is a product of the data workshop, which has been conducted internally at Henning Larsen, as well as with other Danish architecture studios.

We consider all participants on the course as co-authors of the publication and want to give a special thanks to JaJa Architects, Effekt Arkitekter, Dorte Mandrup, Arkitektforeningen, Holscher Nordberg, and our enthusiastic colleagues at Henning Larsen for their generous contributions to this open-source catalog, which we will update it annually with all new data developed throughout the past year.

Despite efforts to ensure accuracy in reproduction of data and hyperlinks, errors can slip through. If you find any, please let us know at carbon@henninglarsen.com.
