Eystur Town Hall shortlisted in 2019 Azure Awards
The shortlist names the recently completed Eystur Town Hall as a finalist in the small-scale commercial and institutional architecture category.
Henning Larsen’s Eystur Town Hall has been named a finalist in the 2019 Azure Awards, an award presented by Azure Magazine to recognize the excellence in international architecture and design. The project is one of 68 finalists selected from more than 1000 entries and will compete in one of 20 categories. Eystur, which was completed in August 2018, is shortlisted in the section for commercial and institutional architecture under 1000 square meters.
Eystur Town Hall crosses over a small inlet to literally and metaphorically bridge two previously separate Faroe Islands municipalities. The single-story building makes a nearly imperceptible mark on the landscape, its black wood façade and grass roof blending seamlessly into the surrounding landscape.
"The primary conceptual idea behind the design of the town hall is driven by the notion of this fleeting line between landscape and building,” says partner and project lead Ósbjørn Jacobsen. “I believe that could be one way to approach modern Faroese architecture."
Inside, the raw concrete and honey-colored timber palette create a space that feels unobtrusive and warm even in the islands’ darkest months. In lighter moments, the expansive windows on either side of the structure flood the space with light and give panoramic views out to the town, mountains, and water.
The winners of each category will be selected by a jury and announced in Toronto on 21 June. The public is also welcome to participate in the awards by selecting their choices in each category in the People’s Choice vote.
