Two projects recognized in international Architecture Awards

Henning Larsen’s Eystur Town Hall and French International School, respectively located in the Faroe Islands and Hong Kong, have been named winners in the Chicago Athenaeum’s International Architecture Awards.

The award program honors the “best significant new buildings, landscape architecture, and planning projects design and/or built around the world,” recognizing works in categories including civic centers, schools and universities, religious buildings, office buildings, and museums and cultural buildings.

Eystur Town Hall literally bridges two municipalities, symbolically joining the two villages under a sloped and mossy roof that doubles as a path.

“A central theme in traditional Faroese architecture is the blurred line between nature and building,” explains Partner and Design Director for the Faroe Islands Osbjorn Jacobsen.

“The town hall design was driven by the notion of this blurred line, and as such a take on modern architecture in the Faroe Islands.”

The French International School carves a bright and airy presence in one of the world’s most dense urban settings. A vegetated perimeter fence establishes the school as an urban green space while a 400-meter long track winds its way through the campus and playgrounds. Inside, the closed classrooms and corridors of traditional school design are cast off in favor of an open plan that allows teachers to open up their classes to each other.

“We dissolved the traditional classrooms and we pushed boundaries on how learning spaces can allow teachers and classes to work together in a more collaborative open space,” says Claude Godefroy, Partner and Design Director of Henning Larsen Hong Kong.

The International Architecture Awards have been held since 2004, paying tribute to excellence in architecture and urbanism from a global perspective. Eystur has previously won the 2018 Architecture Master Prize and the 2018 International Design Awards among others.
