Alsik Hotel & Spa wins CTBUH Best Tall Building Award of Excellence
Balancing tradition and transformation, our 19-story waterfront hotel played a significant part in the revival of the port town of Sønderborg in Southern Denmark. Now, Alsik Hotel & Spa won a Best Tall Building Award of Excellence within the hotel category defined by the 2022 CTBUH Awards program. The program recognizes projects and individuals that have made exceptional contributions to the development of tall buildings and the urban environment.
At the CTBUH International Conference held from November 9th - 12th in Chicago, Alsik Hotel & Spa was recognized as a Best Tall Building Award of Excellence winner. Awards have been given in over 20 categories for Best Tall Building, Urban Habitat, Innovation, Renovation, Interior Design, Construction, and Engineering.
This year’s CTBUH conference titled “Tall Excellence: Seeking the Ideal in Vertical Urbanism” invited over 1,000 global delegates to discuss and challenge a conventional understanding of tall buildings and density in cities. The program welcomed participants to rethink the future of tall buildings for more sustainable, livable, and equitable urban spaces by posing the question: What would be the most optimal solution for any given tall building, or city, on a particular site, in a particular climate, at a particular moment in time?
Alsik Hotel & Spa is a tall building rooted in the city and its surroundings. The 70-meter-tall tower reflects the city of Sønderborg with contemporary features echoing characteristics of the existing urban fabric – the city’s scales, materials, textures, and colors. Alsik Hotel & Spa stands as a landmark enhancing the Sønderborg harbor masterplan by famed architect Frank Gehry, attracting new cultural and commercial potential to the town center. With 24,800 m2 of floor space, the hotel features 190 rooms and welcomes visitors to enjoy four restaurants, a terrace bar, the open observation deck, 1,500 m2 of event and conference space, and a spacious 4,500 m2 spa and wellness facility.
“Our vision was to design a unique piece of architecture that displays Sønderborg as a city in development, to create a beacon for new visitors and growth,” said Louis Becker, Global Design Principal at Henning Larsen who attended the CTBUH Conference in Chicago to present the project alongside John Knudsen, representative of the client, the Bitten & Mads Clausen’s Foundation.
A contemporary homage to the local history and heritage, Alsik Hotel & Spa uplifts the harbor and the city of Sønderborg, driving the town’s urban resurgence and growth as a rising destination in Denmark and the world.
