Hospice Søndergaard is the third Danish hospice designed according to Realdania’s principles for ”the good hospice”. The hospice is situated in Ballerup on the suburbs of Copenhagen and comprises 14 individual rooms. The building is a modern interpretation of a traditional farm where the deep niches create private, roofed terraces with a view of the adjacent lake. On the inside, the wings form two luxuriant, timbered courtyards, and a varied green path appealing to all senses connects the building to the park and lake.
The hospice has a clear and simple layout based on the overall functions of the building. Thus, the common areas and staff facilities are placed near the entrance to provide all rooms with the highest possible degree of privacy. Focus has been on creating a safe and homely atmosphere, where the residents have the opportunity to decorate their rooms according to their own wishes.
